Velserbroek’s Westbroekplas is a chilled city beach gem situated north of Haarlem. This is such a relaxing spot to have a picnic, swim, walk or run.

This city beach gem often goes unnoticed unless you live in the Velserbroek area, or like me, discovered it while searching for new places to walk my dog. It is a popular dog-walking area outside of the swimming season/summer, so don’t be surprised if you find many fluffies running around. If you’re looking for more places to walk your furry friend all year round, read my post about De Bolwerken city park in Haarlem.

The circular walking route is also fun for kids. On the beach side you will find play equipment and my son particularly enjoyed the raft that takes you to a little island.
💡 Protip: I would pack an extra set of clothes and dry socks (for kids and adults). I regret not doing this on the day. 😅

There are beautiful climbing trees, waterbirds nesting in the long grasses and on cold mornings ice forms on the water. Such a serene landscape. When we were there the ponies were grazing near the fence bordering the lake area.

How to get there
From the Haarlem Station it is a leisurely 25 minute-cycle. Add on an extra 10 minutes if it’s windy.
Good to know
⛱ Always check the water quality before swimming as there could be some nasties in the water. During the swimming season the water is tested regularly. I use Zwemwater.nl to check the quality of official swimming spots.
⛱ Toilets are available but I can’t vouch for their cleanliness. The toilets might be locked due to the Corona pandemic.
⛱ Hungry or run out of snacks? The Villa Westend restaurant has a sunny terrace which overlooks the lake. Here you can also hire paddle/supping boards or beach lounge chairs. Take a look at their website for pricing and availability. Of course, nothing stops you from taking your own supping board or kayak to explore the lake.
