Somewhere new. Something different.

Five fabulous terraces on Haarlem’s Spaarne River

It’s officially summer and it is time to enjoy these five fabulous terraces on Haarlem’s Spaarne River. These spots can only give you joy!

Monsieur Rouge

This cosy little French Bistro is quickly becoming one of my favourite restaurants on the Spaarne River. It is the kind of place where you can enjoy the view, completely unhurried. Here you can enjoy a traditional “borrel” with a good dose of French flair! Everything is beautifully presented and fresh.

My recommendation:

  • Camembert “Au Feu” fresh from the oven with honey. Served with rosemary crackers.
  • “Pâté van Parelhoen” with confit d’oignon and almond shavings.
  • Their brownie is also delicious (but I forgot to take a photo of it). 😁

Spaarne 66

This is such a cheerful family-run café right on the water next to the Melkbrug – a historic swing bridge from 1887. Spaarne 66 has won numerous awards for having the best terrace in Haarlem and it’s easy to see why! The location is just perfect for a leisurely breakfast, lunch or dinner (or anything in-between, really!).

My recommendation:

  • Spaarne 66 has the best ice coffee in town! It has lots of ice and the perfect ratio of milk and coffee.
  • Pita with baba ganoush, crispy halloumi, mint and red onion pickle.
  • Makreel with Indian Rogan Josh spices, chilli, salad and coriander on a Pita.

Bar Wolkers

Wolkers is the kind of place where you always feel welcome. It is such a relaxed café with a vintage feel. It serves my favourite breakfast: a platter with a selection of country bread, butter, jam, matured cheese, a boiled egg, rocket, tomato and ham (hummus as a vegetarian option).

Wolkers is one of five fabulous terraces on Haarlem's Spaarne River. This is their Wolkers Breakfast.

It is also a kid-friendly place. Take a look at their kids menu: it consists of french toast, a small orange juice and a DIY original Wolkie stuffed animal. Cute!

Wolkers is an excellent place to work if you’re in need of a change of scenery from your home office. Inside tables have plug points and Wifi is available.

My recommendation:

  • The Wolkers Breakfast
  • Their toasted sandwiches are made with hearty slices of fresh country bread and generous fillings.
  • They make a good cappuccino with White Label Coffee.

Restaurant Zuidam

Restaurant Zuidam is right next to Windmill De Adriaan, one of Haarlem’s most famous landmarks. It is situated in a former boatyard on the Spaarne. Inside seating is available but the best spot is somewhere on the terrace where you can admire the large boats navigating the tight corners of the Spaarne. It is a beautiful setting!

Big plus point: If you have a boat (or you’re renting one) you can moor at the water’s edge, place an order and enjoy your meal right there on your boat.

My recommendation:

Chicken satay skewer with homemade Dutch satay sauce, cassava chips, sweet sour salad and fries.

Teds is such a fun place! It has a good selection of brunch meals and of course mimosas! I love that everything on the menu is available all day.

My recommendation:

  • The waffle fries. I’ve never seen them anywhere else in Haarlem and they are completely addictive.
  • Eggs Norwegian – poached eggs with smoked salmon and Hollandaise sauce served on a croissant.
Waffle Fries at Teds Haarlem. Teds is one of five fabulous terraces on Haarlem's Spaarne River.

Looking for more restaurants in Haarlem? I can also recommend Bij Babette. This is Haarlem’s only English tearoom and it has the best (and only) authentic afternoon tea in town. You have to experience it!
